Just finished this wonderful novel and I'm feeling surrounded by an engaging cast of characters that I would rather not leave behind. The lead is Maxine, a woman struggling to move forward and re-assemble her life following the loss/disappearance of her husband in the 9/11 NYC tragedy. She's principled and determined to persevere despite the sometimes competing demands of her botanical research and the needs of her mother and grown children. Two intriguing mysteries are woven through the tale, however this story is so much more, including romance and the natural beauty of the Maine landscape (both the downeast coast and the north woods). Definitely worth a read!Product details

A Skeptic’s Luck eBook A D Morel Reviews
This book was gifted to me from the writer to read and review. I found the story interesting, informative and entertaining. It takes place mostly in Maine and I certainly learned a lot about that part of the United States. The pace of the story is good and keeps the reader bounding along, but I found some of the characters vague, with not enough substance and there were also parts of the book which added very little to the overall plot, for example the play by play description of a ball game (at 74%) and the bible references to Saint Simeon, who was by any account a very strange man. (I don't think this overwriting is the fault of the writer, but possibly the editor).
The descriptions of the study sites that Maxine visited and worked at, painted amazing word pictures of the area and the plants and animals to be found there. Maxine's style and determination to carry out her work despite problems and hardships were admirable and made her a very genuine person for me.
Byron, another main player in the book was well portrayed except for the vagueness of his job, referred to, only once I think, as Homeland Security.
There are a couple of instances of unnecessarily complicated use of language, in my opinion, ie `beverage' (at 74%), `weeped' (at 58%, should be wept) and `nemesis', meaning greatest fear, used inappropriately.
Although I have made some criticisms of this book, I also emphasise that I enjoyed the story and wish the writer good luck for the rest of the book series, she writes with her heart and knows her subject well.
I liked this book. The story was good, the characters also goo, the writing good. I was pleasantly surprised, to be honest. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did.. I didn't really connect with the characters though... I don't know why... Even so, this was a nice read and maybe I will read it again in the future, who knows? I will be reading other books by this author for sure.
I loved getting to know Maine. I didn't really knew that much about it, so I was happy to get such depth and detail of it's history, landscape and all that. I really loved that!
Another thing I loved was the mystery in this book and how it unfolded. Maybe it's a weird thing to say, but I predictable but unpredictable. My head hurts trying to figure that one out. xD
So this is a good book and I liked it. But it wasn't more then that for me. Good, but not great. That's why I gave it 3.5 stars. Good job A.D.! I look forward to read more from you in the future.
A fun and totally engaging story. The characters have become good friends (some anyway) and I can't wait for the sequel to see how they are coping with their many mysteries. Hurry!
This is a wonderfully written book - picturesque descriptions, interesting character development and amazing technique on the authors part to entice you to read page after page. I did not ever want to put the book down. Love it!
A. D. Morel knows the Maine coast and its people and the North Maine Woods and its roads and mystery. I've lived and worked and played in all the same places as the main character Maxine and it is clear that the author has done so also. Her descriptions bring back good memories and by adding human intrigue and mystery, she has guaranteed that, once started, a reader will find it hard to put the book down. Can't wait for the sequel.
I am so glad that I read this book. I could hardly put it down and even when I did, the story was still running through my head. I was glad I didn't read the back of the cover before starting the book because it added a few more surprises. The images were so vivid and I felt like I was sitting with Maxine on her porch or walking with her in the garden or in the woods. I can't wait for the sequel. I want to hear all about Maxine's next adventures.
You will experience small town life on the coast of Maine and take a trip to the North Woods with the heroine as she wrestles with personal challenges - family, career, emotional - and be carried along at a good pace as the mystery evolves. The author has achieved a good balance of didactic text including information about archeological digs on the coast, the flora and fauna of Maine, the research conducted the hardworking botanist, etc., while creating a narrative that is sufficiently gripping to keep the reader's attention. The scenario is very plausible; the situations, real. And it won't take you long to read once you get going. I'd recommend giving it a try.
